It all started the early 90’s when there were only a few Expat Chefs, meeting on a weekly and later monthly basis to exchange information. With the increased availability of imported and better quality of local products and more access to outside information their interest diminished and with it the meetings.
We have tried various times over the years to revive those meetings without success. The two main reasons where:
1. The expat Chefs showed no interest, some because they wanted to keep all their
secrets others out of plain rivalry.
2. The local Chefs thought that it is only a meeting for the bosses and did not feel
comfortable attending.
In 2005 we where offered the opportunity to work with the Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association (HTA) to organize the Chefs. A steering committee was formed in the and within 3 months with a lot of meetings a charter was prepared. The application for the club was handed in and within 3 weeks we received the approval to set up the club.
From that date on we were allowed to officially announce the “Saigon Professional Chefs’ Club” and to recruit members. We were overwhelmed with the interest and had already 140 members within the first 2 weeks. The official license we received in November of 2005 just in time for the Food & Hotel Vietnam exhibition.
In 2007 the Ho Chi Minh City Tourism Association upgraded our organisation to a Guild.
